X-Men: The Last Stand

*************Spoiler Alert**************

“X Men: The Last Stand” is REALLY, REALLY GOOD. Really.

Apart from the fact that Hugh Jackman returns as the angsty (my favourite word of the year) Wolverine, the storyline which touched on issues like genocide, terrorism & intolerance was an engrossing & thought-provoking one. There were also a few heart-wrenching scenes including main characters who (*gasp*!) die, (yes, die!) & also lose their powers (*gasp* again!).

The aptly cast actors included return performances by Patrick Stewart as Prof X, Ian McKellan as Magneto, Halle Berry as Storm, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey aka Phoenix, James Marsden as Cyclops, Anna Paquin as Rogue, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique & Shawn Ashmore as Iceman. Kelsey Grammer & Ellen Page gave impressive performances as Beast & Kitty respectively. I was especially surprised by Mr Grammer whose long tenure as Frasier in the TV series had him stereotyped, in my mind, as a square, slightly wimpy academic sort. His turn as Beast has certainly corrected that. Well done, indeed.

The special effects with (literally) earth-shaking sound effects were spectacular & made the movie experience all the more intense.

This is, supposedly, the last of a trilogy…but is it? (Hint: stay till the END of the credits, & you’ll see what I mean).

Hmmm... watching tmr...
Not exactly a great fan of the X-Men... only became aware of these mutants during uni days when the guys in the hostel were obsessed with the limited edition of the comics and carefully kept each copy in mint condition with the plastic wrapper intact.

I wasn't a fan of the X-men comic series either, though I have enjoyed the movies. But I do plead guilty to having a collection of plastic wrapped, mint condition comics (not X-Men, but others like Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Power Pack & some other less popular titles)...started this collection while in med school!

Hmm so you collected comics too?

I used to go to Comics Mart every week for about 7 years.

Sadly the comics industry imploded around 1997-1998 and I stopped. The stuff churned out was uninspiring.

Lately comics have gotten better but I borrow the TPBs from the Library to read instead.

Too expensive to buy new issues. They stast at US$2.95 each! Ouch!

Comics Mart at Serene House? Used to go there too, on & off during my "collecting years"!

yeah the one at Serene Centre!

Been there couple of months ago. Very quiet now. No more like those days when it was so crowded on shipment day you couldn't even get into the shop!
